Crash Blossom
Today I return to classic Rubrick LiveJournal fare (apologies to those who were hoping for more dryer lint discussion): New York Times editorial infelicities. Today's NYT contained the following wonderful example of a crash blossom sports headline: "Can’t-Miss Prospect Who Did Returns at 28" So, it's about some sports draft prospect who used to be a tax preparer? I had to read the summary text a few times to figure out that "Prospect Who Did Returns" was not, in fact, functioning as a noun phrase: Jonathan Bender was a lottery pick out of high school in 1999 and drew comparisons to Kevin Garnett. Injuries forced him to retire in 2006, but he is now playing again, with the Knicks. Ah. A can't-miss prospect who did (miss). Got it. Now please try again. |

Winter in Texas
There's currently about an inch of snow on the ground. In Texas. We just had one of the cars here get stuck, on ice, trying to get into the garage. In Texas. Low tonight is 22. For some comparisons, Boston is 28, Wayland is 25, Amherst is 21, Buffalo (where my parents used to live) is 26. And where am I again? Oh, right. In TEXAS. |

Merry Christmas to everyone out there! Stay warm, appreciate those around you, forgive yourself for your mistakes, and look forward to the opportunities of the next year! Christmas thus far has been a frenzy of baking and an overabundance of food, new people, old people, family. It's so different than my life in California, but both are good in completely different ways. Also, happy birthday to capedcrusader92 and my mom because even though it's Christmas Eve, awesome people still have birthdays today too. |

Point of Minor (L)interest
Given a clothes dryer which is shared by multiple people, is it better policy to clean the lint screen before each use, or after? It seems clear to me that cleaning it before use is globally more efficient. To wit: Regardless of the default policy, you still need to check it before use, in case the person before you failed to clean it (either deliberately or forgetfully). If everyone cleans it after use, they end up both checking it before and cleaning it after. But if everyone cleans it before use, they can eliminate the checking step. And yet... most of the people in my apartment complex clean it after they use it— it's usually clean when I check it— and so I feel rude if I don't, since it makes me a freeloader. (In case you were wondering, yes, tonight is laundry night.) |

Consider a deck of cards. If you were design a deck of cards, such that a mythological/fantasy beast (or class of beasts) were each a suit, which four creatures would you use and which suits would they correspond to? My current thoughts are ( under the cut ) |

Wow I should really be asleep.
I was just reminded that the freeway is really quite astonishingly empty at 3 am Sunday night / Monday morning. On a related note, Avatar was awesome in IMAX 3D. I didn't see it on an IMAX screen or anything - it's called such because it used IMAX's 3D projection style, which is to have two projectors going at once each with different polarization, as opposed to Real3D, which has one projector running at twice the speed and somehow swapping polarization every frame. It's the better (but more expensive) of the two. If anyone out there is considering seeing it in 2d because all the 3d showings are completely sold out (except maybe a few tickets for the 11:45 pm showing), trust me, it's worth it. I am not, however, relishing the thought of getting up for work tomorrow. |

Ride from Airport?
For those who'll be in the Bay area on 12/30, is there anyone I can get a ride back from the airport that evening with? I get in about 10 o'clock at SFO. |

Dunno where I ran across this writing challenge, but I wish I still wrote so I could try it.
The rules are as follows: 1. The main character of the story cannot have a gender. 2. The story can't be told in the second person, in the style of those Choose Your Own Adventure books. First and third person are allowed, although first person is probably easier. 3. No fair making the character explicitly genderqueer. 4. The main character has to be well-rounded and interesting - no self-insert Bella Swans or Anita Blakes. 4. Bonus points for giving the character a love interest without gendering hir. 5. Double bonus points for writing a sex scene without sexing/gendering hir. In its purest (read: impossibly well-done) form, someone would write a full-length novel where you never noticed that the main character wasn't gendered until you tried to tell someone else about the story, and end up stumbling over yourself because you suddenly realize you have no idea what pronouns to use when talking about the book. (Or maybe it isn't impossible. Who knows?) Current Mood: coldCurrent Music: Hanukah Song - South Park |

dearest Minnesotans
I will be in our great snowy state December 21 through January 4th. I would adore seeing all of you as much as possible! There could even be -- *gasp* -- plans. I will furthermore be attempting to see S. Gunter Klaus and the Story Before at the Southern Theater either the 22nd or 23rd -- I'm vaguely thinking the 23rd but could be persuaded either way. Want to come with me? Please let me know! I'm also going to the 2009 British Television Advertising Awards at the Walker Art Center, Dec 28th at 6 pm. I already have a ticket (because my brother is on the ball), but more companionship is always fun, and dinner afterwards could occur! Incidentally, you would probably get to meet my SO before pretty much any of the other Minnesotans... did I mention that I'm dating someone? I'm dating someone. And I'm in Austin, trying to find a job so I can stay. [Dear everyone: I am having massive fail at dealing with life right now. I owe many phone calls and I need to just do the things I keep talking about doing, and my sleep schedule's a mess, and I haven't read lj in forever and ever and ever, though I miss you all. I am sorry.] Current Mood: cheerfulCurrent Music: the rhythm of the falling rain |
